Driveway and patio pressure washing in Newark and Sleaford: removing moss, algae and years of grime

A clean driveway makes a bigger difference than most people expect

Black algae creeping across block paving. Moss wedged into every joint of a resin path. A tarmac driveway so green with lichen it looks like a lawn. These are things we see every week across Newark, Southwell, Collingham and the villages in between, and a single afternoon's pressure washing can transform the lot.

It is not just about appearances. Wet algae and moss on a hard surface are genuinely slippery, particularly through the damp Trent-valley winters we get in this part of Nottinghamshire. Getting the surface clean is a safety job as much as a cosmetic one.

We carry out driveway and patio pressure washing right across our service area: Newark-on-Trent, Bingham, Grantham, Sleaford, Lincoln and the rural patches in between. Here is an honest guide to what the work involves, how long it takes and what you should expect from a professional clean.

What driveway pressure washing actually involves

A pressure washer alone is not enough. The process we follow has a few distinct stages.

Pre-treatment. We apply a biocide or moss-and-algae treatment to the surface first. This loosens the biological growth so it comes away cleanly rather than just being pushed around by the water.

Pressure washing. We use a rotary surface cleaner attachment rather than a lance for most driveways. It keeps the pressure even, prevents streaking and is far quicker on large areas. On block paving, we take care to preserve the jointing sand rather than blast it all out.

Re-sanding and sealing (where needed). On block paving, we brush kiln-dried sand back into the joints once the surface is dry. Sealing is optional but extends the time before moss and algae return.

Clearing the run-off. Dirty water has to go somewhere. We direct it to a drain where possible, and we are mindful of neighbouring properties and any planted areas nearby.

Is pressure washing a driveway legal in the UK?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. There is no law against pressure washing your own driveway. The main legal consideration is where the dirty water goes: discharging contaminated water directly into a surface-water drain (one that flows to a river rather than a sewage treatment works) can be an offence under environmental regulations.

In practice this means we work carefully on properties where run-off might reach an open ditch or watercourse, which is something we come across more often on rural properties around the Trent valley and the Lincolnshire fens than on urban streets in Newark or Grantham. If you are unsure about your drainage, just ask us when we come to quote.

How long does it take to pressure wash a driveway?

The honest answer is: it depends on the size of the surface and how badly it is soiled.

A typical residential driveway in Newark or Southwell, say 40-60 square metres of block paving, usually takes two to three hours including pre-treatment and re-sanding. A larger driveway, or one that has not been cleaned for several years, will take longer.

A few things that add time:

  • Heavy moss or lichen that has built up over many seasons
  • Intricate patterns or small-format blocks with lots of joints
  • Paths, patios or steps included in the same visit
  • Very stubborn staining from oil, rust or tree sap

If you want the patio cleaned at the same time as the driveway, it makes sense to book both together. We cover patios, paths, paving and external steps across the same service area.

Is it worth paying a professional, or can I hire a machine and do it myself?

Hiring a consumer pressure washer from a local tool-hire company is genuinely fine for a small, lightly soiled area. But there are a few situations where calling us makes more sense.

Large or heavily soiled surfaces. A domestic machine on a badly neglected driveway is slow work. Our commercial-grade equipment moves faster and the results are more consistent.

Block paving. Getting the pressure wrong on block paving strips out the jointing sand and can dislodge blocks. We use the right attachments and re-sand afterwards, which most DIY jobs skip.

Time. A lot of our customers in Newark, Bingham and Collingham are busy households or older residents who simply do not want to spend a weekend doing it. A professional clean done properly once is often better value than a DIY job that needs doing again the following year.

Biocide treatment. The pre-treatment step is what stops moss and algae coming back quickly. It is easy to skip this when hiring a machine, and the difference in how long the clean lasts is significant.

How much does driveway pressure washing cost?

We do not publish fixed prices because every job is different. Size, surface type, level of soiling, access and whether you want sealing or re-sanding all affect the price. What we will always do is come and look at the job before quoting, so there are no surprises on the day.

What we can say is that a professional clean almost always costs less than people expect, particularly when you weigh it against the cost of re-laying a driveway that has deteriorated because it was never maintained. Keeping a surface clean and re-sealed extends its life considerably.

If you are in Newark, Lincoln, Sleaford, Grantham or any of the surrounding villages, get in touch and we will arrange a free, no-obligation quote.

Driveways, patios and garden maintenance: the bigger picture

Driveway cleaning often comes alongside other garden maintenance work. A lot of customers ask us to clear the garden at the same time, cut back overhanging hedges that are dropping debris onto the path, or sort out a damaged fence before winter.

If you have recently had a tree removed and there is a stump sitting in or near your driveway, it is worth reading our article on stump grinding after tree removal: why it matters for new patios, fencing and lawns. Leaving a stump in place can cause ongoing problems with root growth and surface lifting.

We also deal with overgrown garden clearance across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, so if the driveway is the starting point for a bigger tidy-up, we can help with the whole project.

A note on seasonal timing

Spring and early summer are the busiest times for driveway pressure washing around Newark and the surrounding area, once the worst of the winter mud has dried out and people are thinking about the garden again. That said, we work year-round.

Autumn is actually a good time to book a clean: moss and algae growth slows over winter, so a clean done in September or October with a biocide treatment applied will stay cleaner for longer than one done in April when everything is growing fast.

If your driveway is covered in tree debris, fallen leaves or sap from an overhanging tree, it is worth thinking about whether the tree itself needs attention before you clean the surface. There is little point pressure washing a driveway that will be covered in sap or berries again within a fortnight.

Frequently asked questions

Is pressure washing a driveway illegal in the UK?

No, it is not illegal. The main thing to be aware of is where the waste water goes. Directing heavily contaminated run-off into a surface-water drain that leads directly to a watercourse can breach environmental regulations. For most residential driveways in Newark and the surrounding towns this is not an issue, but it is something to consider on rural properties with open ditches nearby. We handle this as part of the job.

How long does it take to jet wash a driveway?

For a typical residential driveway of around 40-60 square metres, allow two to three hours for a professional clean including pre-treatment and re-sanding. Larger driveways, or those with heavy moss and lichen build-up, will take longer. If you are including a patio or paths in the same visit, add time accordingly.

Is power washing a driveway worth it?

Yes, for most driveways that have not been cleaned in a year or more. The results are dramatic, the surface becomes safer underfoot, and proper treatment slows the return of moss and algae. For block paving in particular, regular cleaning and re-sanding also helps preserve the surface for longer. It is almost always cheaper than re-laying a neglected driveway.

How much do people charge to pressure wash a driveway?

Prices vary depending on the size of the driveway, the surface type and how much work is involved. We always quote after seeing the job rather than giving a figure over the phone, because a small tarmac driveway and a large block-paved one with a separate patio are very different jobs. Get in touch and we will arrange a free quote for your property.
